Interior designers are turning to the classic. And classic architecture begins with columns. Columns typically come from Greek architecture, although of course you see many examples among Roman buildings. You can use them in any room of your home – even the bathroom! – to create a luxurious, elegant feeling.

(1) If you’re working with an architect, discuss possibilities for including columns as structural elements. In particular, for large rooms, you’ll need to place the columns where they bear weight but don’t interfere with the rooms function. For instance, columns can change lines of sight and influence the way people move around a room.

(2) Columns can become the focal point of any room. Plan how you will use your furniture; some materials and styles work especially well with stone.

(3) Choose the style you will use for the top of the column (known as the capital). A Doric or Tuscan style has simple lines; the more elaborate Corinthian columns were traditionally used to signify special buildings.
